if a female is Rh negative, that means she lack of a antigen called Rh.
during the 1st pregnant (esp. during delivery) if she carry a Rh+ fetus.. there is blood contact between the two individual. the Rh from baby will act as a antigen to the mother's immune system. therefore, anti-Rh antibodies will be producted.
During the next pregnancy, as anti-Rh is an IgG which can pass the placenta and get into fetus's blood stream. The anti-Rh will attached on the Rh antigen of fetus's red blood cell.. and hemolysis (break down of red cell) resulted.
red cell is important for carrying oxygen.
and break down of red cell will release bilirubin (the yellow pigment), when accumulated in brain..
both resulted in stillborn or need to do blood transfusion before birth.
but it's rare in HK and developed countries if antenatal check-up had been done on every pregnant women.
