focus issue of my 300D

Last night did make some focus tests on my 300D.

Using 50mm F1.4, central point focus, no UV filter, shooting a ruler at 45'.

:-( I pointed to "15", but the results is clear image at @"14" to "13".. @1cm shorter!

I also tried to use the kit lens for test, but its F is 3.5 max, too large the DOF, can't tell the exact focus position.

I will bring both the body and the lens to Canon to have a 'heath-check'..

i didn't do that test actually because i'm too lazy and i think as a beginner like me, the error won't made any significance. :-P :-P :-P

I am also a lazy bone, I spent time on testing it last night, and being blamed by my wife.. as I forgot to do some house work...!! :-(

I think for close up and using large aperture, it does matter.

I also don't want to go to HungHom, leave down my 300D for week... but I feel a little bit uncomfortable if I don't get it fix...

It seems that Canon sometimes has such out-focus problem even in 10D.

However, Sony w/o DSLR... For DC, it should be fine... for DSLR, it's hard to say.

Hi Suz!

Congratulation! Welcome to the DSLR world! I set to F2.8 or F3.5 when I took Adrian's pictures.

BTW, which LENS are you using?

If you want to try the effect, I can borrow my 50mm F1.4 to you. (If you use it, you can set to F1.4, F2.0, F2.8 or F3.5 whatever)

One of the important things when you use your camera...I generally set my DSLR to use the center focus point only.

I remember that you should need to fine tune your camera if you're using 300D... I can't remember exactly is it related to flash or other issue... Maybe other dada like dom/mcben can give you an idea on this. BTW, you can check the following 300D FAQ.

Hi Suz,

Welcome! Welcome!

I am using 300D, kit lens and 50mm F1.4

One of the issue of 300D is photo will under when using internal/external flash. and 300D got no flash compensation (FEC)
For internal flash or external flash without FEC(eg 420ex), you can use connect the 300D to your PC, using a program to change it (usually +1/3~2/3), then you can keep this value at your 300D. If you need this program, I can send it to you.

If you use Sigma Super 500G or Canon 550Ex, they both got FEC, then it is no longer an issue.

Another potential problem is front-focus, next week I shall take back my 300D, see if any significant diff after they fixed it.

As you might know, many functions of 300D are being locked. Now the latest hack firmware can released a few of them, like RAW file size...etc..

Suz,

Already sent it to you.. let me know if you don't get it. Connect the 300D to your PC when running the program.

About Av setting,
1. you can use the P mode, after half-press the focus, then rotate the dail, Av-Tv setting will be changed.

or

2. Using Av mode, fix the value of aperture.
For kit lens, max is F3.5 at 18mm(@28mm).

Not yet, they said it might take @10 days. Hope they send it back to me by this Friday...

PS : Canon provides free of charge delivery service, so that I don't need to go to HungHom again..

I have been using the 300D for a few weeks now - however, the photos seem to be so dark!!! even with the flash on. If does not matter where I take the pix, indoors or outdoors, they are just dark!
